Action requested: I would like you to participate in this test market. The requirements are that you take our investment recommendations (our product) and put them into a "practice portfolio" This will allow you to easily monitor the results. Secondly, as the test market proceeds we will ask you to fill out a 10 question survey. We will be looking for your inputs to improve our marketing approach, product delivery and potential customer value.
Background: Our approach works on both the buy and sell sides. It is a four step process. We monitor Macro Indicators, we include Marketing Timing Indicators, we focus in on relevant Sectors and then choose the Investment. Our trade secret investment selector is extremely good at determining when to buy and sell a specific investment. Based on our actual experience; we moved out of regular stocks in December 1999 through March of 2000. We reinvested in positions in two "investment quality" defensive sectors. In February of 2001, we started harvesting these defense positions. As of May 30, 2001, our annualized return was a + 28%. Not bad considering that 92% of affluent individual's portfolios were down more than 12% in 2000. In 2001, in another tough year, our Salomon Smith Barney accounts were up 9%. Now we are in the process of reinvesting into different sectors and new equity positions.
Administrative information: For now this test will be handled via e-mail. Choose any portfolio monitoring system you prefer. If you do not already have one, Yahoo and AOL both have a good portfolio monitoring web sites. If you decide to invest your real $'s, use your own broker. In that regard, it is solely your own personal decision to make any investment. We will offer the product and you make all the investment decisions. Common sense says you should practice first.
Education Information For Our Product: For now let's focus only on the buying approach. The first information you will receive is a list of stocks represented by their trading symbol. These stocks will have a "Watch To Buy" (WTB) designation. Once you get the WTB list you should use this time period to do whatever homework that you normally do. I will be updating this list via e-mail, as the signals change. When you get a BUY signal, put the stock into your "practice portfolio." That's how our Product works!!
This product has definitely improved my profits from investing. But to be certain, you should know that we do make some bad choices. Obviously, I am confident in the product or I would not be risking my reputation by sharing it with you.
Administration For The "Practice Portfolio": If you have an online portfolio tracking system you like...keep using it. To set up a new one I would use either AOL or Yahoo. If you use AOL, it has an easy system. Once online hit the AOL Personal Finance icon. Once there, hit the My Portfolio icon, then hit the Create icon and then follow their instructions. Be certain to bookmark this site into your Favorite Places for easy future access.
Yahoo operates a more comprehensive system. Go to the Finance section of Yahoo. You will have to register as new user, but it is free. This requires setting up an ID and password. Once into yahoo finance, find the Portfolio Area and then Create your own personal portfolio. Give the portfolio a name and enter your "practice purchased" stock symbols. Then scroll down marking shares owned, purchase price per share and trade date. Be certain to bookmark this site into your Favorite Places.
Risk Management: We usually keep a list of 20-30 stock on the WTB list, if possible. Most experts believe you should purchase about 10 different stocks, for risk management reasons. Also, establish a realistic target for the amount of $$'s you would normally invest in each stock in your practice portfolio.
Selling Information: Selling uses similar models. We use a "watch to sell" signal (WTS) and finally close the investment position with a SELL signal. Most of the time we just watch, if nothing is happening, we call it NADA time!
